PRESS RELEASE HEATHER WILCOXON Bing,
Bang, Boom! “These paintings open up many possibilities for speculation and interpretation. They are an invitation to play, to join Wilcoxon in her re-created dreams and memories” Frank Cebulski, Artweek. On Thursday, April 6, 2006, Brenda Taylor Gallery will open her third exhibition of the recent paintings of Heather Wilcoxon. In the 20 years she has been practicing the art of painting, Wilcoxon has demonstrated a long-time preoccupation with the balance between abstraction and the narrative. Through her drawings, Wilcoxon has developed characters that reflect all of our concerns, our fears, our worries and our brutality towards one another. Wilcoxon sees the world as a dangerous place, however, she is seasoned enough to see the absurdity of it all. Her cartoon characters represent both the comedy and tragedy of humanity. In their childlike iconography, they embody a sense of innocent playfulness, yet in their monstrous rendering a dark humor is reflected. This dichotomy creates an interesting tension. In Wilcoxon’s larger paintings, the viewer is invited in with nice colors and pretty surfaces. If you look closer, however, there is bite. Heather Wilcoxon’s work has been featured in solo exhibitions at Jack Meier Gallery, Houston, Jim Robischon, Denver, and Toomey Turrel, San Francisco. She has also been included in several group exhibitions at the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, The Triton Museum of Art, and The Bedford Gallery, Dean Lesher Regional Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek. Wilcoxon has received numerous awards such as the Pollock/Krasner Grant in 1999, the Two Marin Arts Council Grants. (1991-1998), as well as a Djerassi Artist in Residence Fellowship in Woodside California. Wilcoxon’s work is in several notable collections, such as the Auchenbach Foundation of Graphic Arts in San Francisco, The Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara and Rene di Rosa in Napa, California. |
